Marathon 2025

Week 3: A journey back to a 7:42 mile and completing my first marathon.

Dear Reader,

The one thing you always forget after taking a few months off is how hard it is to get back into the swing of things.

In 2020, I was on my way to reaching my goal of running a marathon. In May of 2021, I reached my personal best of running a 10k in under an hour, with my fastest mile being 7:42 minutes.

But then, in November 2021, I took the offer to work on a ship and got distracted from my marathon dreams. Now, I am starting from scratch but with a renewed determination. I’m on a mission to make 2025 the year I run my first marathon, and I’m not giving up.

I am pleased with this week’s stats. I am slowly adding more distance, and my pace is also picking up. Today was especially good as I have hit my fastest mile, going from 16 to 12 minutes a mile.

While I keep starting slow, by mile three or four, my body has loosened up enough for me to pick up my speed before my lunges begin to burn. I was running an average of a 15-minute mile for the first three miles but picked up my pace because I wanted to make four miles in under an hour, which I ended up doing.

Since I was only a mile from home, I wanted to see how far I could push my lunges and get my time down. I was so close to the end that I pushed myself and was in real pain; my lungs were burning and felt like a pinhole in a balloon. I couldn’t take a full breath, which hurt, but my legs felt fine, and I pushed through, which was not easy.

I don’t recommend doing that unless you have experience because if you take it too far, you could pass out. But I could push through as I had done before, and I knew how much my body could take. I was able to drop down at a 12-minute mile.

Now that I am in the 12-minute mile range, I am aiming for that to be my overall speed so that I can go from 4 miles in an hour to 5 miles in an hour.

But one step at a time, I am grateful to be making even small progress.
